Shanmughavilasam Bombay Hotel at Central Bazar in Payyanur is one of the oldest vegetarian restaurants in the area. It was originally started in 1942, when local funds were raised to open the establishment, and was named “Bombay Hotel” in memory of the Bombay AICC’s support. Later, around 1946 the ownership changed hands and the name “Shanmughavilasam” was added, honouring Lord Shanmugha, the presiding deity of the local desam.
